A New Week

Now this is just plain wrong. After a weekend of people roaming around in spring coats, some in shirt sleeves even, I’m sitting here looking out the deck doors and it’s snowing. SNOWING! I think Mother Nature is playing her April Fool’s joke a couple of days early.

Go away snow, stop sticking to my deck! It was raining all weekend, the last dregs of winter had finally melted away. Now we’re going to be back where we started. No wonder everyone’s so sick these days, the weather’s been really up and down you never know what to expect.

*sigh* Okay, I’ll try to stop ranting, but it’s going to be hard when I’m sitting in the dining room, facing the deck doors and all I can see is white. I will say that I must have been psychic though, I put a stew in the crock pot when I got up this morning and this is definitely stew weather.

I also have a great view of the above ground pool we have on the other side of the deck. What a mess that’s going to be to deal with in a couple of months. Sometime during the winter the cord that holds the cover over it broke and now that the ice has melted the whole thing has sunk, taking the winter’s detritus with it.

* * * * * * * * * *

I finished the ugly blanket! I actually finished it Wednesday night, so Thursday found me in Wal Mart searching for some wool to make a border around it so it would look finished. I’ve heard rumours that they’re phasing out their wool and fabric departments and I’m beginning to believe it. There wasn’t much of a selection. I settled for an off white, which I used to crochet around the edge for the border. The blanket itself looks like candy floss and candy corn exploded together and landed on marshmallow fluff.

Seriously.

It's been a while since I've done any crocheting, as you recall I was knitting the ugly blanket. I worked steadily on the border Friday night until my upper arm started to hurt. When I woke up in the morning it was really stiff, but I kept crocheting anyway, just to get the darn thing finished.

* * * * * * * * * *

I really have to stay away from Wal Mart. When I was there Thursday I couldn’t help but notice the orchids they had sitting right in front of the cash registers. I love orchids. And I’m actually pretty good at growing them. I have one that I grew from a seedling; it took seven years for that sucker to bloom, but now it blooms on a regular basis.

I have three other orchids I acquired when I worked at a grocery store. The floral department lady knew I loved orchids, so when she’d have to put a hefty discount on one (looked like it was dying, lost it’s bloom stalk, etc.) she’d let me know. I’d take the plant home and nurse it back to health. These ones are great. They take a long time to bloom, but when they do the blossoms last for months.

Anyway, I saw these four foot high orchids in Wal Mart and immediately went into covet mode. When I was back on Saturday I fully intended to buy one, but unfortunately the husband was with me and he reminded me that we have cats who love plants.

*sigh* If I can figure out where to put one that the cats can’t get it, I would still like to buy one. In the meantime, I settled for two miniature orchids, which I’ve never seen before, and a curly leafed ivy that jumped into my cart of its own free will when we were shopping at No Frills.

Would I lie to you? ;-)

Waxing Nostalgic

To bug my BFF while she was at work this week, I surfed around You Tube trying to find the opening song for a really annoying kid’s show she used to watch. I refuse to admit I ever watched H.R. Puffenstuff.

And of course when you search for something specific like this, you get a whole list of related videos, like the Banana Splits. It was such an innocent time . . .

I started waxing nostalgic and started searching out some of my favorite shows from when I was a kid. I couldn’t find the George of the Jungle I once watched - I could only find the updated cartoon series and the opening song from the live action movie. Brendan Fraser did an excellent job of George, I must say!

I did find two of my favorites. Boy, the memories they invoke!

Another One Bites The Dust

I have to admit that I wasn't too crazy about NCIS when I first began to be subjected to it - round about the time the daughter moved back home. One of the channels we get runs NCIS repeats at 7 and 10, so we got in the habit of watching it after supper. Once she moved out I have to admit that I’d still occasionally catch it at 7, but more often at 10 (I’d tell myself it was because nothing else was on).

Lately though, I’ve been catching the current season on Tuesday nights. It’s time to face facts. I’ve started to like the show. I may not be rabid about it, but I’m woman enough to admit I enjoy watching it.

The husband took last night off, which speaks volumes about how sick he's feeling. While I worked on the ugly blanket, he napped in his easy chair and ignored my choice of television programs, namely America's Next Top Model and LOST.

However, when ten o'clock rolled around and I changed the channel to NCIS, he was suddenly awake. Even though he says he doesn't like the show. And he made some comment about "Jethro won't let that happen". I gave him a look and casually mentioned that if you know the names of the characters, you can't say you don't like the show.

See what you started kid?

Crap & Kitty Litter

The title says is all. I feel like crap.

I’ve got the cold/flu back again, not that it ever really left. The cough is getting worse, the sinuses are filling up, and throat is sore. Good thing I’ve got a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. If she doesn’t do something to help me, I’ll just cough all over her.

My productivity has tanked, mainly because I feel like crap. Yesterday’s accomplishments were cleaning the kitty litter and knitting on the blanket. But I’m happy to report that the kitty litter was not as onerous a duty as it usually is because I’ve switched brands again.

When the daughter’s cats were here, I started buying the kitty litter in the big boxes (to save money). I noticed it wasn’t clumping the way it used to. I just figured it was because of the extra cats, but no, it was because they put corn starch in the big box.

Yes, that’s right. Corn starch, which is supposed to keep down the dust and the smell when you have multiple cats. It does keep down the dust, but the smell? Not so much. And the litter seems to lose it’s clumping ability.

So, last time I grocery shopped I bought the slightly more expensive bucket ‘o kitty litter, which does not have corn starch. I changed the pans completely and lo and behold, we’ve got clumping again. Which is the whole point of the scoopable kitty litter.

Aren’t you glad you clicked on this? :-)

Battlestar & Blankets

Did you catch the series finale of Battlestar Galactica on the weekend? The show itself may have been the “best show on television” but it had the lamest ending ever. If it had been a book, I’d have thrown it across the room.

I won’t spoil it by going into detail, but suffice it to say they did answer all the questions and wrapped up the loose ends. It was just the way they did it . . . it was a tad disappointing. I expected better of them. The only good thing I can say is, I got lots done on the blanket I’m working on.

I am knitting the world’s ugliest blanket. Be thankful my camera is kaput or I’d be posting a photograph. Actually, a photograph would be nice because this ugliness defies description. It’s a textured wool, one that’s kind of thin and velvety to the touch, but every couple of inches there’s a puff of fluffy wool. The colour is pink, blue, and turquoise. It really has to be seen to be believed.

I’m not sure what possessed me to buy this wool in the first place . . . I think I blame Wal Mart. It kept getting in all this funky looking wool for cheap prices and we all know how much I love a bargain. Originally I was trying to crochet an afghan out of it but even using the biggest hook I have it didn’t work out well. So I whipped out the good ole knitting needles, cast on 120 stitches (which was supposed to make it 60 inches wide but it’s more like 75) and so far I’ve knit over 40 inches. I’ve used up all the wool that was in the afghan (which was less than half that size) and now I’m starting on the extra balls. I’m just going to keep going until I’ve used up all the wool, then I’ll have to find something to crochet around the edge to finish it. I’m thinking of picking up the turquoise colour since it seems the least offensive to the eye.

Yes, it’s going to be one ugly blanket, but I’ll bet it’s going to be uber warm!

Finishing Weekend

You know, last night I thought of the perfect post for today, but I was busy doing other things so I didn’t jot it down. And guess what. I can’t remember the slightest thing about it now.

* * * * * * * * * *

I was in Wal Mart to pick up a new cartridge for my ink jet printer yesterday and I just “happened” to wander through their housewares department on my way to the check out. My wandering just “happened” to take me through the coffee maker aisle and sitting right there on the shelf was the space aged coffee maker that matched my space aged toaster. Tempting, so tempting, but a little out of my price range. However, when I mentioned it to the husband later he hemmed and hawed a bit and then suggested we split the cost. Maybe next week. :-)

* * * * * * * * * *

Got a lot of odds & ends done this weekend. Finished up the family’s taxes . . . that’s always a relief. Although to be honest, I use the Quick Tax program and it’s pretty idiot proof. You just plug in the numbers in the right spot and the program does the rest.

I also got a bunch of bowling certificates printed out (hence the need for the new cartridge for the ink jet printer). The Bowler’s Association has switched the certificates from heavy paper to card stock and my laser printer, which does such an awesome job of printing, doesn’t like it. I even tried using the side feed but it still kicked up a fuss. Fortunately, the ink jet printer isn’t as fussy.

* * * * * * * * * *

That nagging cough I still have from the major bug I had over Christmas is still hanging in there. Some days it’s worse than others, but I think it’s due more to my sinuses than anything else. I notice if I take sinus medicine the cough goes away.

Good thing I have extra - the husband’s picked up the cough too. Guess I’d better pick up some more Benelyn One All-in-One. That stuff works wonders!

Odds 'N Ends

The husband and I went to Peterborough yesterday to buy out the lease on my car. Yippee skippy! Five more years of car payments and it’s all mine! LOL

It's been beautiful weather for the spring break. The roads were clear, although I could still see snow in the deep woods we passed. I’m telling you, if we get another snow storm at this stage, I will be crushed.

* * * * * * * * * *

This has been a weird week. I kept losing track of the days for some reason. Tuesday I started making a ham for supper and ten minutes into it I realized that it was Tuesday, which means we have to have supper early because the husband has bowling. So I quickly cobbled together a supper that would be done in time for the husband to eat before he had to leave, but my mouth was set for ham (which we had the next night).

Then Wednesday I almost forgot it was Wednesday. The first half of the day I kept thinking it was Tuesday, and the other half I thought it was Thursday. I almost missed LOST and that really would have been a disaster. There’s so much going on that if you miss one episode you really will be LOST.

* * * * * * * * * *

Panda, our female cat, has learned how to open the cupboard door where I keep the kitty treats. The first time I caught her I thought I’d just left the bag of treats on the counter. She was up on the counter with her face stuck in the bag, merrily chomping away.

The second time I heard a noise in the kitchen and there she is, up on the counter again, the cupboard door open and the bag laying on its side on the counter, treats spilling out everywhere. The boys were milling around down below, waiting for her to knock some her way.

I used to keep the bag on the counter, but she’d jump up and rip the bag open. So then I started keeping it in the cupboard, but it looks like I’ll have to find a new hiding spot. Either that or a non-breakable container to keep them in.

* * * * * * * * * *

Have you ever seen something that tickles your funny bone but you can’t explain why? Mine is the MacDonald’s commercials for those stupid little hockey helmets. You know, the one where the little miniature Russian hockey player goes: “I am hockey star, I have my own car . . .” Makes me chuckle every time.

So then the husband explained why that line was significant. When these players were in the Russian league they didn’t get the same kind of money, they were playing for the State. When the Soviet Union broke up, they were able to come over here and play for the big bucks, which meant they could afford to have their own cars.

Meh, it still makes me laugh.

Falling Apart

Ever get the feeling that the internet is falling apart?

First my Zokutou bars went south. No big deal, they’ve done that before, but they’re usually back up again in a day or two. This time they’re still down and it’s been almost a week. Looks like I might have to find another source for my progress bars.

Next it was my favorite flash games site. I’d just found the most awesome version of Mah Jong ever, and the site went down. It’s back up now, but it took several days. I was going into withdrawl. Not that I’m addicted. I can stop playing any time. Really. :-)

The latest thing that happened was my MSN started bugging me to upgrade to the newest version. I got tired of it nagging me so I updated. To be honest, I’m not crazy about the newer version. I’m sure I’ll get used to it in time, but it’s a pain in the butt that I have to.

This is my big complaint about computers in general. You’re always having to update programs. Like Windows. I’ve gone through Windows 3.5, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows XP. So far I’ve avoided Vista, but I hear there’s going to be another new Windows program soon. Where is it going to end? Bill Gates already has more money than God, maybe he should just sit back and enjoy it.

Appliance Angst

This starts with a trip to the grocery store. Yes, this will be a bit of a ramble so if you want to pause a moment to get a fresh cup of coffee, it’s okay. I’ll wait.

*

Ready? Okay. I bought a new toaster when I went grocery shopping this weekend. I probably didn’t need a new toaster, but there’s been a lot of complaints about the toasting quality of the old one. It had two settings, stale bread or burnt to a crisp. And No Frills just happened to have a big stack of shiny new toasters piled up in their produce department.

So, attracted as I am by shiny things and bargains (nothing beats a shiny bargain) I bought one. This is no ordinary toaster, my friends. It’s a digital toaster. It has a power switch and electronic settings. Very futuristic.

And honestly, the fact that it came in black (to match my larger appliances) did nothing to sway my decision.

And the urge to replace the tea kettle, coffee maker and can opener is purely coincidental.

Fifty-Seven

That’s how many books were in the massive sac ‘o books BFF dropped off on Wednesday. FIFTY-SEVEN! And it was a nice assortment of romance too, not all historicals (which BFF favors). I like the occasional historical, but not a steady diet of them, like some people I could name. ;-)

I took my haul into my home office and looked around and thought: damn, I have a lot of books! I either need another bookcase (which means I won’t have room for a comfy chair to sit in) or I need to start letting go of some books.

Meh, sitting’s over-rated. I can just go across the hall and sit on the futon if I really want some place soft to read. Right?

* * * * * * * * * *

Two bright, shiny days in a row. Just enough to give me a little boost of energy. Enough energy to open the door to the craft closet. Yikes! What a mess. Where did all this wool come from? I have enough wool left over from the daughter’s afghan and the one I did for my Aunt to make another afghan. Somewhere I have a pattern for a ripple crochet that uses the same technique that’s used in a granny square, only do you think I can find it? Of course not.

I found pages and pages of snowflake patterns - you know, the ones that use crochet cotton (which is just one step up from sewing thread). I don’t know what possessed me to copy all these patterns, especially the three dimensional ones. Found two really cute santa faces I crocheted about two years ago, but no pattern for them either. Can’t even find one on-line and trust me. I’ve looked.

So I've spent a productive morning consolidating my bags of wool, cleaning out tote bags with various half-finished projects, and organizing my knitting needles and crochet hooks. This afternoon I’m going to pick apart two unknown, partially crocheted projects that were started with a textured wool and never finished and use the wool to knit throws. If there’s enough. If not, then I guess it will be shawls.

Done!

My application form to the government to receive funding to go back to school is finished and I handed it in to my counselor this morning. Insert big sigh of relief here. OMG what a pain in the ass it was to fill out! Twenty-two pages, not counting the researching of six possible jobs and three different schools.

I want to thank Amanda for coming over and untangling me from all that red tape I was caught up in. I couldn’t have done it without her! Well, I probably could have. But it wouldn’t have been as good and it would have taken a lot longer. Even so, there were a couple of things the counselor had me change when we went over it together this morning. Now she just has to do her part and then it can be sent away for approval (knock wood).

And just to reinforce my superstitious nature, this was my horoscope from the Toronto Star today: You are entitled to seize an opportunity that is just around the corner. Your prospects for success are great. And this one is the daily horoscope I have delivered to my inbox: Are you ready? Are you in shape for what is going to happen? The celestial aspects are heralding a new cycle that will be filled to the brim with activities, new people and new professional perspectives.

Now it’s out of my hands and relax. Maybe even read a book, which is handy because my BFF dropped off a bag of books for me yesterday. And when I say bag, I mean like fifty pounds of books.

Okay, maybe not fifty pounds, but I bet there’s more than fify books in that bag.

I’ll let you know . . . later. :-)

Happy Tuesday

I confess, I stole this from Gennita Low's blog, but it was too funny not to share!

The clips came from a PBS production called Frenchman's Creek, which was a pirate romance. The described video is a hoot, but even funnier are the comments by the creator of this video.

Wondering Weekend

It was a wondering weekend ‘cause I’m wondering what exactly I did with my time.

Friday we had the kids over for club sandwiches (a traditional turkey leftover meal in our house) and I made a few salads up. Saturday was grocery shopping and the husband and I used a gift certificate we got at Christmas for Swiss Chalet for supper. Sunday I printed out more wedding invitations for the daughter and started on my paperwork to go back to school.

There it is. My weekend in three sentences.

* * * * * * * * * *

Anybody else out there have cats? Have they been acting weird lately?

I don’t know how much of it is they’re just freaked out because the daughter’s cats aren’t here any more and how much of it is the change of weather. But the cats have all been acting uber weird.

Panda, our token female cat, has laid siege to the kitchen in hopes of kitty treats. You can’t move in the kitchen without her under your feet. Makes it really hard to get meals ready and although she likes her kitty treats she’s not usually this aggressive about it.

Her evening behavior has changed too. Normally she doesn’t hang around with us at night, but the last couple of nights she's alternated from the foot of my recliner to a plaid blanket on the couch. Last night Dante was a little put out to discover his mommy in his favorite spot (my recliner) so he made do with the blanket. Later, when Panda wanted to switch, he refused. She stood over him, washing his head vigorously, but he refused to budge so she came back to my chair. Atta boy Dante!

* * * * * * * * * *
Really not impressed with the weather we’ve been having. Yes, it warmed up quite a bit, but it was also grey and miserable for the most part. The sun was too little, too late as far as I’m concerned. Then last night the wind started up and today is a hodge podge - sometimes windy, sometimes calm, it’s wet and cloudy, scattered hints of snow with the sun intermittently shining.

Okay, now that was a flash of beauty. I’m sitting at the dining room table looking out through our deck doors. The sun lit up the landscape for a few seconds and it was breathtaking. The bare branches of the trees are thick with drops of water, which reflected the light like glass.

I really have to get my camera fixed!

Friday I started something new with my writing blog, Creative Fridays. Each Friday I’m posting something original, an excerpt from a work in progress, a story, a poem . . . If you haven’t done so already, check it out and leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Haphazard Hump Day

Okay, I have to admit it. I’m cold.

Anyone who knows me will be shocked by that statement. I am “She-of-the-perpetually-too-warm”.

The crazy part is, it’s been sunny the last few days so you’d think it would warm up the house, but it doesn’t. I’m cold and I have the slippers and fleece vest to prove it.

Maybe it’s just because with it being sunny out I figure it should be warmer than it is. But minus four is not warm, not even in my books.

I have relocated from my chair in the living room to the dining room table with it’s eight foot wide deck doors with the southern exposure. It’s only slightly warmer than the living room, but infinitely warmer than my office, which has a northern exposure and could double as a freezer right now.

It’s supposed to go up to plus one today. And checking the weather network I see that by the end of the week it’s supposed to be plus eleven and we’re expecting rain all weekend. Seriously?

I think the weather is f-ed up.

* * * * * * * * * *

Went for coffee with a friend yesterday morning. This was doubly nice because it was one of my writing friends. She’s been having a tough go lately and has been trying to get back into her writing, so it was good to share some ideas.

She’s been having problems with the person she uses for editing - the woman’s had health issues and lives about 45 minutes away so the transportation factor is another issue - and she asked if things didn’t work out with her current editor would I be interested in the job. Of course I would! She doesn’t even have to pay me.

* * * * * * * * * *

Two more long rows to sew on the afghan and it’s just the border that needs to be done. I should be finished by the end of the week.

Just in time for the weather to warm up! :-)

Fourteen to Go

Yes, that’s right. I only have fourteen squares to go on the daughter’s afghan and then all that’s left is sewing four rows and the finishing. And a lovely afghan it’s going to be, if I do say so myself. I’ll have to get her to take a picture of it when it’s finished because, yeah, my camera is still broken, and it looks like it’s going to be staying that way. I suspect that what’s wrong with it is not something that can be fixed and I’m a long way away from being able to buy a new one.

Anyway, I crocheted like a mofo last night and churned out 52 squares. All the same colour, boring, but this much closer to being done. It helped that the daughter was over to watch Gilmore Girls.

Even after she left I kept crocheting, right through Eureka and the Mummy Returns. Then I gave myself a break to play a game on the lap top, but since I dozed off in the middle of it, I gave up and went to bed.

I should be finished the afghan by the middle of the week. Which means, what do I do next? Write you say? Pshaw! That makes too much sense. Besides, I’m still working on my writing mojo. It’s coming, but it’s taking its own sweet time about it.

So, I’m thinking that I might start just a random afghan using the odds and ends left over from the last two I’ve made. Both incorporated shades of brown, so the colours will work well together. This, of course, is dependent on there being something worth watching on television to do my crocheting in front of.

Wow, a whole post about crocheting. Can it get more mundane than this?

Well, do you really want to hear about the kids making the final move into their own apartment or how I spent the better part of yesterday cleaning house and then sacrificing one of my No Frills turkeys in the name of supper?

Didn’t think so.
